Salary Negotiation

Oxford Definition "Confer with view to compromise or agreement; get of give money value for (cheque); transfer (cheque) to another; deal successfully with.

Getting the salary you want is imperative prior to starting a new role, if you are unhappy with the initial offer it is essential to negotiate otherwise what is your alternative?

Surrender? Leave it to Luck? Arbitrate? Or Put it off for another day?

The above options will not leave you satisfied or motivated for your new role and you will find yourself in a win-lose situation.

When an offer is made, do not immediately accept, even if the offer meets your expectations. Take time and ensure you read the small print of contracts. Remember this is your next career move and it should be all you want.

If the salary offer is less than you had expected then don't despair you can reach a win-win situation. If the organisation has made an offer then they obviously felt you were the best candidate for the role, they want you.

Before any negotiation, ask yourself what it is you want to achieve, your best approach is an assertive and influential style over a hostile and aggressive approach. It is often an idea to research and gain an understanding of what the industry benchmark is for the position. You can obtain this information by checking out the recruitment pages in the press and job vacancies on web sites. Consider the package offered and not just the basic salary; if there is no room for negotiation on the salary, can they increase the benefits? Know what you want and ask for it.

It is important at the end of the negotiation to summarise and ensure each party understands that you have achieved and what exactly it is. Ensure you receive an amended offer letter / contract stating the changes.
